Backups
RTILA X stores all your data — projects, sessions, logs, chat history, profiles, and settings — in a local database. The Backups section in Administration lets you create snapshots of this database so you can restore your data if something goes wrong.
Think of backups as “save points” in a video game. If something goes wrong — a corrupted database, an accidental deletion, a failed update — you can restore from a backup and pick up where you left off.
To open Backups:
- Click your profile name in the bottom-left corner of the sidebar.
- Click Preferences → Administration → Open Administration Tools.
- Click the Backups tab.

Automatic Backups
Section titled “Automatic Backups”RTILA X can create automatic backups on a schedule. By default, automatic backups run daily at midnight.
Automatic Backup Settings
Section titled “Automatic Backup Settings”| Setting | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enable automatic backups | Toggle | Off | When enabled, RTILA X creates a backup automatically at midnight every day. |
| Number of backups to keep | Number | 7 | How many automatic backups to retain. When the limit is reached, the oldest backup is deleted automatically. |
How to enable automatic backups:
- Toggle Enable automatic backups to On.
- Set the number of backups to keep (default: 7).
- Click Save Auto-Backup Settings.
How automatic backups work:
- At midnight every day, RTILA X creates a backup of the entire database.
- The backup is saved as a ZIP file in the backups directory.
- If the number of backups exceeds your “keep” limit, the oldest backup is deleted.
- Backups are named with timestamps for easy identification.
Tip: Keep at least 7 backups. This gives you a week’s worth of restore points. If you make frequent changes, consider keeping 14 or 30 backups.
Manual Backups
Section titled “Manual Backups”You can create a backup manually at any time. This is useful before making major changes to your projects or configuration.
Creating a Manual Backup
Section titled “Creating a Manual Backup”- Click New Backup.
- RTILA X creates a backup immediately.
- The backup appears in the backup list with a timestamp.
Tip: Create a manual backup before:
- Making major changes to your projects.
- Updating RTILA X to a new version.
- Importing projects from another installation.
- Making changes you’re not sure about.
Uploading a Backup
Section titled “Uploading a Backup”You can upload a backup file from another RTILA X installation or from a previous backup:
- Click Upload.
- Select a
.zipbackup file from your computer. - The backup is uploaded and appears in the backup list.
Note: Uploaded backups must be in the RTILA X backup format (ZIP files created by RTILA X). Backups from other applications won’t work.
Opening the Backup Folder
Section titled “Opening the Backup Folder”Click Open Folder to open the directory where all backups are stored. This is useful for:
- Manually copying backups to external storage.
- Verifying backup files exist.
- Freeing up disk space by deleting old backups manually.
Backup location:
~/.rtila-x/database/data/backups/On Windows: C:\Users\YourUsername\.rtila-x\database\data\backups\
On macOS: /Users/YourUsername/.rtila-x/database/data/backups/
On Linux: /home/YourUsername/.rtila-x/database/data/backups/
Backup List
Section titled “Backup List”The backup list shows all your backups with the following columns:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The backup file name (includes timestamp) |
| Size | The backup file size (e.g., “24.5 MB”) |
| Date | When the backup was created |
| Actions | Restore and Delete buttons |
Restoring a Backup
Section titled “Restoring a Backup”Restoring a backup replaces your entire database with the backup’s contents. This includes all projects, sessions, logs, chat history, profiles, and settings.
How to Restore
Section titled “How to Restore”- Find the backup you want to restore in the backup list.
- Click the Restore button (history icon) next to the backup.
- A confirmation dialog appears warning you that restoring will overwrite all current data.
- Click Restore to confirm.
- RTILA X restarts with the restored data.
⚠️ Warning: Restoring a backup overwrites all current data. Any projects, sessions, or settings created after the backup was taken will be lost. Make sure you want to restore before confirming.
Tip: Create a manual backup before restoring, just in case you need to undo the restore.

Backup Best Practices
Section titled “Backup Best Practices”| Practice | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Enable automatic backups | Ensures you always have recent backups without thinking about it |
| Keep at least 7 backups | Gives you a week’s worth of restore points |
| Create manual backups before major changes | Protects against accidental data loss |
| Copy backups to external storage | Protects against disk failure |
| Test restores periodically | Verify your backups actually work |
| Don’t delete backups you might need | Once deleted, backups cannot be recovered |
| Monitor backup sizes | Very large backups may indicate database bloat |
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Backup creation fails | Check available disk space. Ensure the database is not corrupted. |
| Restore fails | The backup file may be corrupted. Try a different backup. |
| Backup file is very large | Your database may have accumulated a lot of data. Consider cleaning up old sessions and logs. |
| Automatic backups not running | Ensure RTILA X is running at midnight. Automatic backups only run when the app is active. |
| Upload fails | Ensure the file is a valid RTILA X backup (ZIP format). |
